The Glass Ceiling : alive and well

For many people ‘inequality’ based on gender is something of the past. We read of the exploits of Emily Pankhurst and the suffragettes as they staged hunger strikes and battled police and the government for the right to vote, and think with relief that we’re lucky to live in a century where no such battle is necessary. Women are entitled to equal pay ; to equal opportunities and to recompense from the law should these things not take place, in particular within employment. However there is a misguided perception that this legal entitlement has reflected itself in reality, that the dry and legalistic drafting of equality has translated to the complex world of work in which women must survive.

Yet only 14.2% of FTSE boardroom posts in the UK are filled by women ; of the 650 MPs in the House of Commons, a mere 145 are female ; men earn on average 19.9% more than women…Need I go on?

I’m afraid ladies the battle is not yet won.
